Three's So Not Company.

One of the best parts of having a farm is watching the interactions between the different animals. At times, it can be almost like watching a soap opera play out right in front of you, or maybe a romance novel if it's spring.

The deep and lasting bonds that some of them develop with each other is amazing. One such bond, is the "marriage" between Grandma and Grandpa. They're my favorite couple on the farm, by the way - so devoted and always right by each other's sides.

But everything hasn't always been picture perfect in their storybook love life. You see, this past spring and summer, when Miss Scovy (pictured below) came of age, naturally being the only Muscovy that we had at the time she had to find someone to hang out with. Those someones happened to be Grandma and Grandpa. If you've ever been the third wheel, then you know the green eyed monster can easily rear its head. And it certainly did with them.

Everything seemed fine at first, and I thought, 'Well, that's nice that she has someone to spend time with,' because let's face it, waterfowl love to form cliques. But before long, I began to notice Grandma chasing Miss Scovy away protesting loudly all the way. For a Jumbo Pekin to chase anything at all is surprising - I mean, honestly, they're not the most sprightly of ducks, in fact they tend to be on the portly side and usually prefer a nice slow stroll rather than an Olympic worthy sprint. And I can only imagine the words coming from Grandma's lips. . . er, bill, but I think in duck-speak she was probably telling Miss Scovy in no uncertain terms to stay away from her man. Not that I blame her any because I did notice Miss Scovy wink at Grandpa a time or two and whisper sweet nothings in his ear - the hussy. Grandpa, for his part, barely gave her a second look.

Finally, though, Miss Scovy got the message and befriended the Khaki Campbell girls, instead, and they were more than happy to accept her into their fold (The KC girls are always so cheerful and easygoing).
Since we've added the other Muscovies, things are even better as Miss Scovy has a boyfriend and Grandma and Grandpa are back to being their lovely selves. Better yet, since Grandma knows that Miss Scovy has her own fellow, they've even gone back to being friendly with each other again.
