Being a loyal Auburn fan, this may be the only time I say this (and the only time you see an Alabama picture on here), but I'm very proud of Bama today.
While I'm not a rabid fan (I was in the marching band in high school and went to enough games and pep rallies to last a lifetime. . . or maybe even a couple lifetimes), I do keep an eye on what's going on and manage to watch at least a couple of games each season. You see, when you live in Alabama, you have to pick a side - Alabama or Auburn. There are other worthy colleges throughout the state, but to most people those two are the only ones that matter. The famous quote, "On the East Coast, football is a cultural experience. In the Midwest, it's a form of cannibalism. On the West Coast, it's a tourist attraction. And in the South, football is a religion, and Saturday is the holy day," sums up our love for the game perfectly and the Alabama/Auburn rivalry, too. That rivalry is so deep-seated and strong that after a 41 year hiatus from playing the Iron Bowl, it took an act of government (Literally - the Alabama House of Representatives passed a resolution in 1947 encouraging the schools to overcome their dislike of each other, and when both teams still wouldn't meet on the gridiron the state threatened to withhold funding. . . which naturally worked) before both teams would face off again in the Iron Bowl in 1948.
So, why am I proud of our all-time, longest, and biggest rival? Well, #1 at least the title will remain in state for the 4th year in a row, which is pretty cool, and #2 because it makes the fact that we lost the Iron Bowl to them for the 2nd year in a row a little easier to swallow (I mean, if they're the #1 team in the nation, then we had no chance, right? At least, I'm going to keep telling myself that).
And besides, who knows, maybe it'll be Auburn's turn again next year (I can always dream, can't I?) ;)
